OIData: a 90-second tour of a data-heavy app

OIData is made by the same person as ShotDemo. Its promo video is where ShotDemo's engine began, and this example is that promo rendered by today's engine.

What went in

• Eighteen screenshots of OIData's pages at desktop size: the Session Chart in light and in dark, the dashboard, a market mood page, a dealer positioning page, a stock screener, the option chain, a page that follows open interest through the day, and pages for expiry day, premiums and volatility, plus seven more for a closing montage.
• Thirteen lines of script written by OIData's maker. ShotDemo voiced them, timed them and planned the camera.
• Prabhat, an Indian English voice, 15% faster than his usual pace, because the tour covers a lot of ground.
• The pad music bed, generated by ShotDemo, so nothing needs a licence.

Tricks worth copying

A theme switch as a cut. The Session Chart appears twice, light and then dark, with the same framing and a slow dissolve between them. The camera continues its push through the change, so it reads as the page switching themes rather than as a new scene.

Pans for tall pages. The dealer page and the screener are long. Instead of shrinking them to fit, the camera starts on the summary at the top and pans down to the table, the way a person would scroll.

Two screens under one line. The premiums page and the volatility page share a single spoken line, three seconds each, each with its own caption.

A montage for "and more". Seven smaller pages pass at one second each under one caption that names them all. It tells the viewer the product is bigger than the tour without a sentence for every page.

A sidebar the camera ignores. OIData's navigation takes the left 13.5% of every screenshot. The project says so once, and every camera move centres on the content beside it.

Names spelt for the voice. The script spells OIData's name the way it should sound, while the captions and subtitles keep the written name.

The vertical version

In 9:16 each screen has its own camera. On the Session Chart it pans across to the labelled levels at the right edge instead of pushing in, because a phone frame shows only a slice of a wide chart. The 15-second ad keeps five scenes: the opening, the chart, the dealer page, the option chain and the closing card.

One change for this page

OIData's own copy of this video ends with its monthly price on the closing card. This copy leaves that line out: prices change, and a video lasts longer than a price.

The full tour, scene by scene: the caption on the screen, then the line the voice reads. The player's captions button shows the same words over the video.
